Holistic health is acquiring an understanding for healthy living and of preventative techniques instead of just providing symptomatic relief. It is extremely important to assess the overall health of the person, both physically and mentally, and then try and ease the problem from its root cause, while at the same time building the body natural immunity. It is far better to prevent the problem from occurring in the first place.

Unfortunately preventative medicine has not been given enough emphasis. It is far too easy for a doctor to hand out a prescription for pills when something goes wrong. I am not against Western medicine, antibiotics have saved lives when given to the patient who need them to fight a bacteriological infection but should not be given out for viral infections, as they have no effect against that sort of infection.

A wholesome diet, sufficient exercise, emotional security and some form of spiritual or psychological nourishment are all factors that help to preserve a sense of well-being. Aromatherapy and Herbal medicine are thousands of years old yet somewhere down the line we began to loose these ancient methods that are now finding their way back into our approach for healthier living.

Many health clinics around the world are now incorporating an approach to bring together Western medicine and complimentary medicine. Doctors are starting to receive the history of medicine with reference to the development of other systems like tradition Chinese medicine, homeopathy and osteopathy. Our new age is putting emphasis on the healing power of nature and the body healing system.

There is greater awareness on mind/body interactions, exercise, relaxation, meditation and visualization. Nutritional medicine, herbal medicine, manipulation, bodywork, acupuncture, energy healing and guided imagery these are all complimenting Western allopathic medicine.

Sometimes, when we are feeling ‘a bit under the weather’ we should examine our diets and sleeping habits. An inadequate diet can cause very many minor health issues and can lead to major health issues if not corrected in time. We should examine if we are eating a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, adequate minerals such as calcium, magnesium and zinc, protein in the for of fish and chicken cutting out red meat and saturated fats. We should be eating more omega 3 fatty acids this is found in fish and flax seed but can be taken as a supplement. I also recommend taking a vitamin and mineral supplement. One should cut down on their caffeine intake; apart from making us feel jittery it can cause digestive problems.

It is important to get adequate sleep; the average adult needs between 7 – 8 hours sleep a night to function properly. Too little sleep can cause mental and cognitive problems. Children need between 10 and 12 hours sleep depending on age. Most accident, at work or on the roads, is caused by sleep deprivation.

Holistic medicine teaches us we need to bring balance into our lives in every sphere whether it is physical or mental and once we have obtained that balance we can start to live life and enjoy life.

Holistic treatment is about treating the mind, body and spirit as a whole. Everything is supposed to be in balance but when something is out of balance, the whole suffers. The part that is out of balance may not be where you are experiencing a problem. A good holistic practitioner will look beyond the problem for the actual cause of the imbalance, and will treat the problem as well as relieve the symptom.

It is sometimes difficult to locate the source of the problem. The human body is an intricate machine with many complicated processes happening constantly, all vital to the health and wellbeing of the whole. A good practitioner will look into many aspects, including, diet, exercise, work, leisure and relationships, to find the cause of a problem.

Modern medicine is beginning to realise the importance of a holistic approach to health care. Many doctors are learning about alternative therapies and modifying them to suit their personal approach to health care. The West versus East view has been modified and intelligent medical practitioners are using combinations of treatments and ideas to alleviate symptoms in their patients.

There are still areas of medicine, which are open to ridicule among the more traditional western style medical practitioners but as more and more research is being done, scientific proof is coming to light to prove the effectiveness of many branches of alternative medicine.

That is not to say that all types of alternative medicine have been proven beneficial. Some seem to have no effect, and some are actually dangerous, if applied the wrong way. There are some types of treatment that have a positive effect only if the patient believes, so they are probably a placebo, rather than a treatment, although it can be argued that it works on some people so it is therefore an effective treatment.

It is interesting to note that as more research is done, results are proving the body’s organs, chemicals and functions are all dependent on the whole to work properly. If one thing is out of balance, it has a flow through affect over all the system.

We live in exciting times, where we are only beginning to understand how things work. It would be sensible to keep an open mind and to use all available methods to ensure you are at the peak of your health. Look into holistic treatments to stay in best health.
