Pregnancy Massage Therapy
The modern mum-to-be is a stressed out individual, having to cater to increasing pressures of a fast paced society and work place. Yet at the same time, she knows that her wellness is crucial especially during her pregnancy if she wants a smooth delivery process and the birth of a healthy happy baby.
This increased awareness has led to the search for alternative approaches in addition to traditional health services. Pregnancy massage therapy is one such alternative approach. It has much therapeutic value as it enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves blood circulation and relieves mental and physical fatigue.
Pregnancy Massage can be prenatal, postnatal or during the labour process, although many refer pregnancy massage to just prenatal and post-natal massage to mean massage that takes place a few days after delivery.
In a prenatal massage, the massage is focused on reducing pregnancy discomforts and aims to enhance the physiological and emotional well-being of both mother and foetus. A relaxed mother also helps in the development of a brainy and healthy foetus. Also, the massage helps to strengthen and prepares the muscles that are useful for a natural delivery process.
Many women fear a long delivery process. Yet, many desire one that is as natural as possible and without the use of epidural or any other drugs. During labour, massage techniques exist to help shorten the delivery process while easing pain and anxiety.
Post-natal massage focuses on toning the new mother’s body, reduce fluid retention and and helps the body be brought back to balance and shape. It also helps to rejuvenate and re-energize the new mother and thus enhance her ability to bond with her baby.
The pregnant female should always first consult her doctors if she is suitable for massage or for any other alternative therapies that they wish to try. Her overall objective is to achieve a good mental state and physical health and to have a wonderful birthing experience.

The treatment of arthritis by holistic medicine is becoming increasingly popular. Once dismissed as mere fantasy or even dangerous, even doctors are now being forced to accept that holistic medicine has been shown to have many benefits in the treatment of chronic conditions such as arthritis.
Holistic medicine approaches are that diseases tend to develop from several different causes, varying from person to person. Contributory factors for disease development also include imbalances caused by environmental, mental and other physical factors.
Physicians practicing holistic medicine always try to find the root cause of any disease, and patients will usually undergo a variety of diagnostic tests, including examination of diet, digestive function, immune system, stress levels and emotional/ mental condition. The idea is to treat the body and mind as a whole- hence the term ‘holistic’.
Holistic medicine usually involves treatment from a range of natural or homeopathic remedies. These are also supplemented by a change of diet/ detoxification program, proper nutrition, a program for the reduction of stress levels if required and maybe even counseling.
Chinese herbs are often used to restore energy and balances to the body’s system- Chinese beliefs are that diseases in the body are caused by obstructions which affect the flow of energy through the body to the organs. Once this energy, or ‘Qi’, is restored, then the disease will be cured. Acupuncture can be tried alongside Chinese herbal medicines; acupuncture works by inserting very fine needles into the skin to target the different energy points in the body. Arthritis sufferers have reported relief from their symptoms following acupuncture.
The arthritis sufferer may also find meditation to be beneficial, in both reducing stress levels and pain. Various herbs can provide relief from pain and swelling and tend to have very few side effects. Black Cohosh has pain- relieving qualities similar to aspirin. It has also been shown to reduce joint inflammation. Celery also has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as being a good source of potassium. Potassium deficiency can aggravate arthritis pain.
Feverfew is another herb containing anti-inflammatory properties, and also stimulates the circulation. Other herbs shown to be beneficial in treating and relieving arthritis symptoms include Chaparral, Ginseng, Liquorice, Oregano, Rosemary and Wild Yam.
Gentle massage can be an effective pain reliever. This usually involves light kneading or gentle stroking of the affected muscle to stimulate increased blood flow to the area. Make sure that you use a massage therapist who is familiar with treating arthritis sufferers as the affected joints will be very sensitive.
Holistic medicine tends to work on treating the body and mind as a whole, in the belief that imbalances in one area will impact upon other areas. Many arthritis sufferers have found considerable relief through these methods, although you should always consult your doctor before trying alternative treatments.
